The Advisory Board of Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management (2016-2017) Announced — New Board Members Include Pony Ma

Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management (Tsinghua SEM) has announced the Advisory Board member list for academic year 2016-2017. Two economists and four entrepreneurs join the Advisory Board as new members. Three members take over from their predecessors. Two economists are Eric S. Maskin, Adams University Professor, Harvard University, 2007 Nobel Laureate in Economics and A. Michael Spence, Professor, Stern School of Business, New York University, 2001 Nobel Laureate in Economics. Four entrepreneurs are Pony Ma, Core Founder, Chairman of the Board and CEO, Tencent, Cyrus P. Mistry, Chairman, Tata Sons, Brian L. Roberts, Chairman and CEO, Comcast Corporation and Jacob Wallenberg, Chairman, Investor AB. Denis Duverne, Chairman of the Board, AXA Group, Mario Greco, CEO, Zurich Insurance Group and Jonathan D. Levin, Philip H. Knight Professor and Dean, Stanford Graduate School of Business replaced their predecessors to become Board members.

Eric Maskin is Adams University Professor at Harvard. He received the 2007 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics (with L. Hurwicz and R. Myerson) for laying the foundations of mechanism design theory. He also has made contributions to game theory, contract theory, social choice theory, political economy, and other areas of economics. A. Michael Spence is Philip H. Knight Professor and Dean, Emeritus, at the Graduate School of Business, Stanford University. In 2001, he was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for his contributions to the analysis of markets with asymmetric information.

Pony Ma, as a core founder, created Tencent in 1998, and has lead the company to grow into one of the largest and most used Internet service portals over the last 17 years in China. Pony Ma was awarded as “The Young Global Leaders” by the World Economic Forum in 2006, “Best CEO for the Year” by theInstitutional Investormagazine in 2008, “Chinese Business Leaders for the Decade” by CCTV in 2009, “30 Outstanding Persons for the 30th Anniversary of the Shenzhen Special Administrative Region” in 2010.

Cyrus P. Mistry is the sixth Chairman of Tata Sons Limited and was appointed as the Chairman of the Board in December 2012. Tata group is a global enterprise, headquartered in India, comprising over 100 independent operating companies. Brian L. Roberts is Chairman and CEO of Comcast Corporation. Under his leadership, Comcast has grown into a global Fortune 50 company uniquely positioned at the intersection of media and technology with two primary businesses, Comcast Cable and NBC Universal. Investor AB is the leading owner of Nordic-based international companies, founded by the Wallenberg family a hundred years ago. Jacob Wallenberg is Chairman of Investor AB. He is also actively involved in the airline industry, the telecommunications industry, and the power and automation technology industry as Vice Chairman of SAS, Ericsson and ABB.

The three new Tsinghua SEM Advisory Board members taking over from their predecessors are all leaders in business and higher education. Denis Duverne was appointed as Chairman of the Board of Directors of AXA on September 1, 2016. Mario Greco has broad experience in the insurance industry, having successfully served in senior executive positions for more than 20 years. He joined Zurich in March 2016 as Group Chief Executive Officer and member of the Executive Committee. Jonathan Levin is the Philip H. Knight Dean of the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Levin received the American Economic Association’s John Bates Clark Medal in 2011 as the economist under the age of forty who has made the most significant contribution to economic thought and knowledge.

The Tsinghua SEM Advisory Board was established in October 2000, consisting of distinguished Chinese and foreign board members who are leading entrepreneurs, business school deans, thought leaders and renowned scholars with significant global influence, and Chinese government officials for economic and financial affairs. ZHU Rongji, the founding dean of Tsinghua SEM, is the Honorary Chairman.
